Start with the dimensions you can measure

Measure from the actual surfaces, not the nominal lumber label. A nominal 2×2 baluster might be 1.5 inches wide; a nominal 1×4 picket might be 3.5 inches wide. Check several pieces before entering the Member width. Use the Clear Length between Post faces for railing, and the Overall Length from outside Post face to outside Post face for a fence Run.

How this layout is calculated

Each Bay is solved independently. Equal mode divides the length left after whole Members into equal gaps. With no edge Members, n Members create n+1 gaps. Read the formulas and rounding rules before transferring marks.

Frequently asked questions

What units can I enter?

Bare numbers are inches. You can also enter feet and inches such as 8 ft 3.5 in, mixed fractions such as 8' 3 1/2", or metric dimensions such as 2540mm. Units stay visible beside each input.

Where do running measurements start?

Member marks start at the left inside face of the Bay. Run Post measurements start at the outside face of that Run’s first Post. Plan Post distances follow the centerline from the first outside face.

Why does the solved gap differ from my target?

Whole Members must fit the measured Clear Length. Equal mode selects the nearest feasible count and divides the remaining space equally. Fixed mode keeps interior gaps at the target and places the remainder symmetrically at both ends.

How do I save or share my plan?

Use Copy plan link. All input dimensions are in the address, so the same URL restores the plan on another device. There is no account or server-side storage.

Will the printed strip be the right size?

Choose Letter or A4, print at 100% scale, disable fit-to-page and browser headers, then measure the six-inch calibration line with a physical ruler. Stop if that line is not exactly six inches.

Does this replace local code or product instructions?

No. This is a layout and quantity tool. Verify local requirements, product dimensions, installation gaps, structural design and footing specifications separately before purchasing or building.
